Thought I would try to get this going again. This year I am teaching 14 freshmen and they are a great class!!
This year we assigned each of the kids a scripture mastery scripture that is "their scripture". These are the devotionals for the first few weeks. The kids are responsible to come up with a creative way to remember their scripture and its reference. So far we have Matthew 5:14-16. Our friend Matthew who is a teacher (14-16) uses all five fingers to light his candle.
Another thing that we did today was I asked all the parents to write some of their thoughts and feelings from when their child was born and I gave the parent's comments to each student and then we talked about qualities that make a good parent. Some of the things the parents wrote were so sweet. That was definitely worth the effort! I learned though how important it is to frame something to help kids appreciate the importance of it (because I did not do that very well...learn and move on!!). You can make an experience so much more powerful just by framing it correctly for the kids.
